TO The Editor:
NOAM Chomsky brings to bear a well-developed analytical capacity — which would be fine if we all were up to that level of thinking. Unfortunately, semantic disturbance is the common lot, and the neurotic, indeed pschotic, consequences are our collective burden as a species. This happens because of the overwhelming role of hormonal homeostases resulting from what the muslim Sufis have long contended are primary biological emotions, of anger, fear, greed and lust — not to mention the universal laziness. People get shirty with Prof Chomsky because thinking is — WORK. It’s easier to throw tantrums — and bombs! As to Israel, the tragedy of the Jews is the tragedy of humanity which is the tragedy of the abused spaniel [described above by another correspondent — BW]. Because of what happened to european Jews during WW II, the israeli body-politic is collectively mentally-ill. ‘Syphilitic with fright!’ as my old Dad used to say. The response to horror was to go hareing off to the Levant and to play Settlers & Red Indians — precisely when Europe otherwise was on the eve of letting go its colonies. So Israel, alas, is historically an anachronism. The only solution, as Edward Said so often pointed out, will be a thorough-going civil-rights movement — intermarriage and ‘loss of identity’, ie. If Chomsky is hard to stomach for ‘unregenerate personalities’ (another concept of Muslim Sufis), this even-more-sensible insight of Said’s will enjoy of course an even-less-universal reception. But, on demographics alone, the ONLY creative thing Mr Bush now could hope to do would be to lead the way for once and for all, finally (!), binding over if need be his rather unnerving daughters in arranged marriages, one to the Grand Rabbi of Jerusalem (sic) and the other to the Head Hizbullah Bombardier. Yes, it HAS gotten just that horribly silly. The problem of the victim in history is the need (human obligation!) of the victim (with all the love and support onlookers can provide!) to settle down — if need be over and over — and to try to go on with the oppresser. In aid of such a daunting task the world would have its hands full today for example, supervising ongoing common life together of the german and european and western jewish people — together — in Europe.
