SOME Days there are, despite all of my undoubted love and passion for our remembered past, when the realization is just too much, of what a horror life is at one another’s hands, was and — worst of all — “ever shall be” for so many of us in the World. Times like that bring home in all futility a sharp feeling for the real worth of the weary effort at historianship by historians, and I for one simply want to puke and crawl under the covers.
