AS I am muslim and represent in these pages a culture that is widely reproved because of its cruelties and oppression of women, I will naturally be seen to have something at stake in the discussion. The real motive of any “clash of cultures” of course is that all involved are mutually so relieved when they can manage to find others worse off than themselves! As a student of Sufism I am no fan of judicial murder of women for having sex outside of marriage, and I will only add that because there are objective differences between cultures as Mr Thomas Sowell and others tell us so often, I am only glad that the only hazards to our daughters here in America parading around half-undressed in public are mere moral ones. These are as is well-known not “objective” because they are personal only. And so we in the West are additionally fortunate because besides all of the weapons and “information technology,” there is nothing whatsoever on Earth that a little therapy or treatment cannot fix up.
NOW If we can just manage to get everybody in line too about “global warming….”
THE Problem is, in any case, our common (!) human being. This condition is repulsive especially to our western “individualism” idea and so everybody wants to escape from all the unpleasant anonymousness and no possibility in it whatsoever, of being personally noticed all the time. As to the ample horrors everywhere else in the World of today, the Arabians and their abuse of women are far away in spite of all the speeding airliners and jet contrails. Poles apart in fact from our public embrace of exhibitionism-for-all. And now as technology speeds up what passes for “communication,” the paradox is that the Saudis as well as other cultures will recede further apart now at an ever-accelerating rate. This is a kind of compensatory and centrifugal retreat. It happens in all cases just as people fear their own deaths, because of an imagined “loss of identity.” So that all are in a desperate rout for the high ground in a time of looming bad possibilities, which we now realize at bottom we control less-and-less with every appearance in public of Mr Al Gore — even as we can SEE them lunging like Mexicans with razors better than ever before!
“STILL Worse,” at the end of the day too there is no “objective” way NOW to figure out which human setup(s) will survive and carry out the tasks of the future, which in no case of course includes US. So much for the outward state of affairs….
