AS We advance grimly into the 2008 AD american presidential-election cycle, I may say that I do find myself mildly troubled by a certain class of public letters here in the american newspaper-opinion pp as to their tone; I mean the outraged yelps & submissions from the soi-disant saecular-humanists, who cannot abide the fact that other weaker & un-schooled, usually-not-professional, personalities may feel a need to appeal to their religious values in making their political choices. I have no quarrel of course with these non-religious gentry because they hold certain anxious feelings of contempt for perhaps the most of their neighbours; or, insofar as their nominally-educated views are honestly their true opinions: for I am, myself, a good deal like the sainted Franklin Roosevelt, certainly at least in terms of a certain fey habitual knack for lying & a barely-disguised contemptuous sense of noblesse oblige; and so, naturally, I am at least as firmly opposed to ‘fundamentalism’ and crass convention in whatever form it rears its head as any of the tenured professorate at the state teachers’ college here, in Terre de Bleu City. Nor am I even half so well-paid by anyone to do it!
But, I should only wish to point out here that the religious personality in our social species is, like it or not & precisely, merely another natural fact, like the anti-creationist Professor Dawkins and our late-historical & last-gasp professionalist hypercredentiallism, or sugar in the urine. Or now, possibly, ‘global warming’. And I daresay that if supporters of the american Democrat party are intent on actually winning this election — by a meaningful and actual plurality for once, a ‘landslide’ if you will — then, first of all, they must acknowledge that this party of ameliorative subsidy & ‘helping-professional’ aggrandisement stands very far from that goal, to-day.
Now of course I am not going to write about any of this in the public pp of the Terre de City Daily & County Clyster, here at home in Squawbunion county in southern Minnesota & Greater Ioway, as, while emotionally I am a Democrat of course & as I’ve acknowledged here before, in fact I support the libertarian idea and so will be frying other fish in the Autumn.
On the other hand, I do want to see these false-conservative Republicans set on their backsides for a good long time to come every bit as much as do you readers of Bodwyn Wook, one & all.
My point is that, whether we like it or not & regardless of our superior credentiallised post-religious & higher post-modern state of relative moral development, a majority of Americans are not so gifted; and, in fact, they persist, to our chagrin as the case may be, ‘religious’ in some innate essential sense; and, indeed, they so describe themselves in the polls. Indeed, I rather expect that this last figure is often distinctly in excess of a percentage I read the other day somewhere, of the ‘seventy’ per cent of Americanos who are said to be cheesed off with the miserable and depressing, depressed continuous, swindle of the G W Bush second mis-administration.
I should now therefore only wish to draw your attention to the recent discussion by Mr E J Dionne, Jr, a syndicated liberal columnist, of the split now emerging possibly in the republican demographic:
Not a few of the religious supporters of the old-time Reagen Democracy now are feeling badly swindled, twenty-eight years on. A full generation after it was first ‘morning again in America’, they still may not be the great supporters of course of our post-modern twin themes: of hygienic & drive-through abortion-on-demand; and, of the all-in groping bare-backed artistries of HIV-oblivious pan-sexualism: but, I repeat, they are feeling badly swindled these days, and hard done by.
Accordingly, I am sure our readers will only agree that we will all be more than amply re-paid in the months ahead, if we but now & henceforward direct our ire, and that of all our friends and neighbours regardless of what pew each one may sit in on the Sunday, against the very worldly (and not the religious!) crimes of the ‘GOP’:
THE Very heinous and oh-so-saecular power-mongering, at every point of the compass;
THE Un-ending assaults on the Constitution, at every point of the compass;
THE Reckless greed, and insane incessant glowering and growling out over all the dying Earth, at every point of the compass & for mere semite-oil;
THE Ruinous extravagance at every point of the compass (and, we are told nowadays, no longer any of it, not any more & at no point of the compass in any direct way, for the well-being of the american people!);
AND, Of course, the cryptic & obnoxious, hardly madisonian, business of an undue propinquity at every point of the utterly dis-oriented national compass, to a so-called ‘fifty-first state’.
IN Closing, then, I expect you will understand perfectly what I mean, when I say that the remorselessly ‘realistic’ & cynically logical, and obviously not-religious figure, of Mr Richard Cheney, is the very embodiment of the ‘rationalistic’ horror to be opposed at least as much as we do the hysterical transcendant fundaments who burden the world of religious faith with their detestable explosions of the deluded lied-to young & all the rest of their foul & prophetless, made-up, theological megrims; for, indeed, the transparently god-less gentleman from Wyoming, this constitutional halfwit of the aeternal felonious ‘power-moment’, this non-moral objective opportunist of every lie & non-stop theft of our birthright to liberty itself, is the very figure of all that is dark & brooding & most nixonian in the very ‘humanism’ itself; and, with the gleaming cowboy boots always shined and glinting ignorantly up at the World & brutally from beneath the tailored trouser-cuffs, saying in the contemporary american message of to-day & seemingly to all the World:
