The primary phase of the 2008 presidential race is now well-underway, and so here is a look at how it will go in November as matters stand now:
It is the beginning of a new week and Mr Senator McCain (whose essential historical irrelevance we have already alluded) for what it is now not worth has beaten Mr Huckabee in the lower of the two Carolinas. And, Mrs Bill Clinton and Mr Romney, the Michigan Sphinx, stand neck-in-neck so to speak in Nevada. Mr David Broder, the conventional mainstream columnist, now asserts a “new clarity” in the primary-races, which of course is the usual sort of pure persiflage we all churn forth under pressure to write at least something. And also in this case it is a pure (because not intended) inkling of the grim eternal fact, that in parallel with the public process there are now ferocious intestine battles afoot between the divers claques and coteries of the two American major political factions.
In essence, it would now appear that the weight of events is being beaten and banged around into line once again by party managers, into support of the two obvious “business-as-usual” candidates, Mr Mitt Romney and Mrs Clinton.
This last lady of course represents both old unfinished business to the subsidized professionalist wing of the American democracy — and, to many voters is simply the old business herself. However, one expects that in front of the conventionally business-minded and corporatist Mr Romney, Mrs Clinton now will be able the more successfully to trail the national health-care promise and dead cat. This is not least because the misused and until-now-republicanised evangelical Christians at this point have been abandoned by the Republican senior managers, they are all now so much the older and closer to the hellfire of endless geriatric surgeries than they were in 1980, and so not a few of them will be inclined to abandon outright gay-bashing in favor of a kindlier version of their beloved Jesus.
This of course will be for sake of the more-benevolent and socially-conscientious christianism to which Mr Huckabee was trying to appeal — and which is a message thus that now has fallen into the hands of Mrs Clinton’s managers to manipulate.
If these urbane sneering darwinist people have but the wit to seize the moment!
And so, if these DLC gentry 1) can keep obvious Democrat gay activists rather obviously out of sight, 2) softpedal abortion as a “regrettable necessity” to be ameliorated and reduced and, hopefully, eliminated by better sex-education, including some concerted speechifying about adolescent sex-abstinence as “a necessary component,” and 3) quote (as often as possible!) the general parts of Dr Martin Luther King’s social gospel on behalf of “Miz’ Bill,” then they will be able thereby to gull the critical handful of wavering evangelicals, take an underhanded and continuous hit at Mr Obama in the meanwhile, and so secure the Democrat nomination — and, victory in November.
For as matters stand now and were the balloting to be done today, Mrs Clinton should indeed win by a sliver now over the opaque and liver-lipped Mr Romney — and, so, the elder senectuous 1946-55 wing of the more-or-less busted American baby-boom would reassert once more the clutch of its rotting dead hand on the mishandled lever of our national affairs for one more agonising and undirected, staggering and stammering, presidential term.
The quid pro quo for Mrs Clinton and the Democrat faction of course will be to consent to extensive support and tax-advantages for projects among Republicans such as Mr Minnesota Governor Pawlenty’s scheme now afoot (Mr Governor Pawlenty uses hair-dye!) with the governor of Arizona, to build pipelines for Lake Superior water to the Southwest. Environmentalists when they cop to this will howl as always in vain, but a few more of us will maybe get some health care out of the deal, at least for awhile and until China cashes in her chips….
