I Confidently predict that within the month the story will make the rounds about how Mrs Alaska Republican Governor Todd Palin has “Native (you guessed it!) American” ancestors. That’s how these election campaigns get done. The only question is which of the First Nations will be handed the honor? Most Americanos today have anyway heard the name “Cherokee,” that one is popular. But if Mrs Palin is any good at all at this roots-business, she will land on the Miami people, of Ohio (I picked them back in the ’80s, in a shortlived frenzy of geneaological excitement and wasn’t even running for elected office!), or on some other tribe of unheard-of Indians. That would be subtle, if unwelcome to the ‘skins themselves. But then they have been putting up with these white skunks for years, and meanwhile the non-Indians will all think it’s romantic and “liberal” and multicultural, and stuff like that. It will make the GOP Vice Presidential candidate look positively moderate and, oh Hell, “understanding” or something. So the game is played. You read it here first….
