The following article by Mr Matthew Parris in today’s Times should help to begin to restore some calm:
Needless to say, as an actual conservative and oldtime Goldwater campaigner, I am glad to be rid of the nationalistic (therefore NOT patriotic), crazed and objectively God-damned, lying, stealing Republicans, but you can be sure that President-elect Obama has his own overdone ideas about Federal power and a “strong Presidency.”
It is this set of vast notions about power beyond the consistent moral capacity of human nature that is the berries.
No matter how benevolent Mr Obama’s intentions may be on behalf of ordinary people, the fact is that all exercize of power of this sort only raises the ante in the end. It makes the trinket of Federal power even more powerful and tempting. In the longterm, then, it only insures that eventually we will all get loaded down with another gang of sociopaths. It is all perfectly well, meanwhile, to congratulate ourselves yet once again on a smooth transfer of power — another bullet of History dodged! — but one of these times this accelerating extreme cycle is going to exceed constitutional limits for good and for all.
It is the Presidency that is the problem, not the Presidents who after all reflect us, the US, in all of our tangled Tee Vee dreams — and infinite capacity for World hypocrisy and self-deception.
