Bill Ayres’ PRR Crestline Roundhouse Website

Here is the link to Bill Ayres’ chronicle of the Pennsylvania Railroad engine facilities at Crestline, OH:
Especially fine are the vintage Henry C Burkhart photos of daily work and life at Crestline. Also, Ayres has posted some remarkable pictures of the PRR “Big Steam,” the S1, T1, Q1, Q2 and S2 experimental and duplex locomotives.
As to this picture below of an S1 being constructed, it is as massive and archetypal as all get out. When I was a little boy of three or four in the early 1950s, after a visit to a St Paul, MN, roundhouse while riding on my Pop’s shoulders, I dreamed of just such mysterious and deeply terrible scenes of steampower. These workshops there in the black night in my crib seemed like the hot snug heart of Hell itself. Just that fascinating to me…it was all still just in the air!
