Late-modern western policy wonks are in a dither tonight over very possibly “losing” Egypt.
Still worse, they dread the loss of face in front of a rising China. What shames above all is losing the investment of billions on billions in foreign aid, to “fundamentalism”. Supporting the insupportable in foreign policy of course is the essence of machiavellian diplomacy and has been so throughout the modern age. But by still playing at this hopeless game, American diplomats show to the whole World worst of all their own anachronism. In this third decade of postmodernity, self-styled credentialled Washington, DC, “elites” still export “made in the USA” tear gas canisters to bully police forces abroad and call it “democracy”; or, better still, “secularism”.
More rightly as a human matter, of course, these same parochial North Atlantic spokespeople, when commenting extra-locally on cultures not theirs, condemn the abuse of women under fundamentalist islamic regimes.
This criticism, however, would carry more value if we did not ourselves abuse our own daughters in a host of ways not inapposite to the murders of “honor killing” of hick Sudan and Afghanistan, and in slick oily Saudiyya. They stone “their” women for adultery. Ours we let wander stoned through the mauls and Facebook half-naked and unaware of any other moment in life to come except the rock-and-roll and wholly-brainless here-and-now. Cyclical and many-sided abuse of the feminine is a tragic human universal. It is of course true that such of our girls as still, even today, can find the authentic individuality freely to choose creative lives have better, or at least far more, options than their muslimiyya sisters of today — but, now, our girls arrive at these choices more and more solely through family or other personal influences, and not those of politicized school systems and market-driven-downhill “society”; the latter do not guide the young any more in any coherent way. Apart from the luck of the draw, parents themselves actually adult or the occasional ethical and committed teacher, all is up to kismet. And yet there can be no real choice absent a moral basis; all else is jabbering. Our incoherency at home about the ethical basis of our common life of every day together reflects the inchoate “policy” floundering overseas, of a government of professionalist careerists with no World-reason left to be on this Earth, a global nuisance “conducting” a made-for-Tee Vee war on “terror”.
What is this “terror”, precisely?
What else if not the terror of History, of remorselessly and relentlessly being left behind?
And next let me ask you this:
How else, now, do you think it possibly can be?
Ever since the allied victory sixty-six years ago in two Oceans, we in Old Europe and North America have been educating the dark-skinned foreign, here.
To what end?
Somewhere at the beginning of it all was a “United Nations” idea, and the Right were diddled into playing along because of course education in western techniques and business was “anti-communist”. What we know now, however, is that to take Hindoos, Mahemotans and Hottentots, and shove them all into sport coats and horn-rimmed glasses doesn’t particularly make them over. And still less does it renew their home societies. Societies must renew themselves; a theoretical “clash of cultures” may lend momentum, although that is a sword with two edges. All we have gotten out of the “Third World” “development” fantasy, meanwhile, is three generations of imitation “westerners”; and, the governments of Nigeria, Pakistan…and now Egypt. The rest of the foreign aid-funded “exchange” students stay here, swap their passports for American national papers and practice the worn-out subsidy-inflated medicine of the Old Atlantic West, in the Mankato, MN, Clinic.
The tear gas canisters labelled “made in the USA” whether western humanists can stand it or not attest the exhaustion of that same humanism, and these same gas clouds in al-Kahira tonight veil but scantily the end of the Renaissence civilization of the past five hundred years. Not so of islam, mind you! As I write, it is the year 1432, and our real renaissance is still ahead. People all over the World who are fully human in their being — this is still the minority of all minorities among men! — do include all muslims actually regenerated by our faith; and, one and all, these rightly abhor and fear the ignorance and rage of fundamentalism. For others it is a chance to forge careers and have a new version of some crusade other. But, to overdo this fear of what is after all only the average condition of men is nothing to the point.
If we forget the most basic rhythms of History and reel in shock at the present outbreak of fundmentalism in islam over the past generation, and the equally ignorant reaction in the non-muslim West, what exactly is it that we are actually doing?
What else but ourselves falling into the literalist fallacy?
It is silly to be so syphilitic with fright at a mere wrinkle in Time!
In the christian seventeenth century, fundamentalist protestant and puritanical government was perhaps at its height; not least, it rose up on the ruinous excesses of degenerate bureaucratic catholicism. Now, in the oligarchic rubble of bankrupt late-modern national states going on thirty years out-of-date, islamic fundamentalism has risen up in protest. By the North Atlantic eighteenth century, a hundred years on, liberal democracy was embarking on its fruitful course. This is the story that we all know; and, that democracy through its many phases would not finally become bankrupt until…now. Likewise, in a century, give or take, islamic society as religious identity will break out of itself into some new transcendent form.
It very well may not be democratic — “been there, done that!’ — and plus just remember this, our sexually manipulated maul daughters in their idiot hordes are the cruel last casualties of “democracy” at its very end — and still less will islamic renewal of the World arise out of anything but our final passing away into Time and ‘insh’Allah Remembrance.
But, all of it will be to clear the way to turn onto a new road for Life over the next five hundred years.
And in this lies, among many other great and good things to come, the renewal of our very Science, now so lamed and weak and weary; and, now, unable to do anything any longer except to predict the endless floods and drought, the galactic core explosions, hellish super volcanoes and all the other tides of poisoned fish and extinguished species, that are the gloomy and supremely not-imaginative stock in trade, of doomed “environmentalism”.
