General Stilwell over Christmas Dinner, 1943 -- 072913The Diaries of “Vinegar Joe” Stilwell

posted by B Wook

The picture is of General Stilwell over Christmas Dinner in the field in 1943; not three years later in Carmel, CA, he would be dead of cancer.

For those who care for the story of the crabby anglophobe Stilwell as much as do I, this link to his diaries at the Hoover Institution will be a great find, indeed!

As one digs deeper, there will be found, too, his prewar journals as well and dating back to his West Point years.

Ethics and the Will of God: The Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

posted by B Wook

This link looks into the ethical dilemma confronting all Christians, and all persons holding to any morality greater than the trance of “the here and the now,” in the temptation  to “go along to get along”:

Bonhoeffer — Agent of Grace

posted by B Wook

The abysm of “the state,” the sewer of the corporation only deserve the devotion of men and women to the extent that they protect and care for creatures with no exceptions; for if it is not right for a man or a woman to do, it can not be made right for any group or gang of them to do.

Nina von Lerchenfeld and Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, Spring 1933 -- 072013

The picture is of Nina von Lerchenfeld and Claus Philipp Maria Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, Spring 1933; to-day marks the death in 1944 of von Stauffenberg (b 1907) in front of a hastily-gotten-up firing squad in Berlin, on the night of his failed attempt to blow up the repulsive Adolf Hitler earlier in the day East Prussia.

The link below is to an interview with Nina and Claus von Stauffenberg’s daughter, and it is timely to remember that the anti-Hitler plotters were not operating in a timeless sort of horror vacui; but, rather, that they one and all had family and friends dearly loved and for whom they deeply felt themselves to be acting:

H L Mencken, atheistical skunk & freethinker -- 012813H L Mencken, Atheistical Skunk & Freethinker

posted by B Wook

“A society made up of individuals who were all capable of original thought would probably be unendurable. The pressure of ideas would simply drive it frantic. The normal human society is very little troubled by them. Whenever a new one appears the average man shows signs of dismay and resentment. The only way he can take in such a new idea is by translating it crudely into terms of more familiar ideas. That translation is one of the chief functions of politicians, not to mention journalists. They devote themselves largely to debasing ideas launched by their betters. This debasement is intellectually reprehensible, but it is probably necessary to carry on the business of the world.”
