English [‘British’ — ed] National Archive Records Available On-Line
by B Wook
Genealogists & other historical researchers may welcome this information, namely that files of the English [‘British’ — ed] Public Record Office are now available on-line; this is a far cry from my boyhood, when all the birth-records notably were at Somerset House and, as with the Reading Room of the British Museum, foreigners & those without a British passport needed a letter from one’s embassy. The PRO has been for many years situated in Kew & the restrictions when I visited in 1986 & 1988 were rather less.
Now, the whole boiling seemingly, including military records, are available at least for search on-line under the heading of ‘The National Archive’; PDFs may be downloaded on the Visa for £ 3.36 & I’ve been having fun rounding up some stuff on an relation in the RAF in 1940, including a nice specimen of his signature on a combat report!
