The Metropolitan Building, Minneapolis — First Skyscraper Built West of the Mississippi

Our mother’s divorce lawyer, Edward (?) Serstock had offices up in the Metropolitan Building; the cagework elevators with their bronze grills were spooky to a small boy & in the atmosphere then of our family’s ruin, I wondered morbidly, too, just how many had leaped to their deaths in that obviously haunted old building & over the railings of the upper floors around the central atrium?
The floors of the gangways were thick (!) panels of…glass! These were fogged & off-white with layers of wax; but, on one visit I saw that some levels had been stripped & cleaned, and that the translucent glass blocks were actually palely green.
